How to dress DOWN effectively
We like versatile clothing here at Just g Boutique and you’ll often hear me telling my customers that you can dress something up or down. When I was talking to my mum this week she was telling me that she sometimes found it difficult to dress things down. It got me thinking that it’s quite easy to visualise something glammed up but less so to make it more casual or day wear.
So, here are some of my tips to dressing down:
Got a sleeveless or halter-neck dress that you love, but it just sits in the wardrobe waiting for an occasion? Transform these into day wear by covering up arms and décolletage – layer underneath or on top to create different looks.
Try on light-weight jersey base tops in same and contrasting colours to see which has the best effect. A shirt or blouse works well underneath shift dresses to change it from occasion to work wear. Finally, consider adding cardigans, fitted jumpers or blazers on top to make it look like you’re wearing a day dress or skirt and top.
For example, this Kling dress is perfect for a wedding, yet popping a wee blouse underneath makes it perfect for work.
Make sure the fabric of the garment you’re dressing down will work for daytime (unless that’s the specific statement you’re going for). For example, you may not get away with popping a cardi over that floor-length taffeta evening gown you love so much! Some things should be kept for that special occasion.
2. Mix it up
So you’ve got some lovely tops and bottoms that only see the light of day when you’re out for a posh dinner, which is hardly ever. Another tool to dressing down is mixing up your “fancy” clothes with your “everyday” pieces. It’s like they meet in the middle and create a great and stylish look that you can wear all day & night.
Here are some combo ideas:
Posh top (think silk shirts, fitted lace tops etc) and your comfy or coloured jeans. Wear with flats for an even more relaxed look. Remember to also wear your day handbag.
Tailored trouser or palazzo pants and plain t-shirt or vest with flip flops or flats. Simple accessories also work well for a relaxed look – think simple gold or silver chains or earrings. Low-key but effective.
See how these elegant wide leg trousers by Skunkfunk go from evening wear with the Sketch top to day wear with casual Nancy Dee T-shirt or Kling jumper for colder days.
Strapless summer dress with boyfriend fit cardigan and flat shoes – this is a very boho look. If it’s still a bit chilly, tights and flat brogues work well.
The key is to only have one of your “fancy” garments or accessories on in one look.
3. Footwear & accessories
In a world wear high heels seem to equal formal, sexy, night out and power; flat shoes or boots can be your best friend when dressing something down because they will make everything feel day wear. You don’t need to compromise on style either – there are flats to suit every style and taste these days! Remember as we get into summer, a flip flop, sandal or wedge will have the same effect.
Why not try a casual trainer to dress down a cigarette pant or dress – make sure you choose something with some colour and a style to suit you. Try to avoid anything too sports like or it just looks like you’ve forgotten to change out of your commuting shoe!
Another quick trick is to add a belt to change the shape and style of something – great for dresses.
4. Hair & make-up
When dressing down, you should also think about how you wear your hair and make-up with the garment. For example, if you are wearing something that you normally wear on a night out and you would usually wear your hair up and full evening make-up on; try keeping your hair down and go for simple nude make-up . Changing your hair and make-up will help you re-associate the garment to this new day-wear situation.
We like these pictures of Scarlett Johansson – a great example of a day and night looks.
Think about all these tips when you’re dressing down and play around – it’s amazing how many outfits you can actually create!
