Fashion Fix Friday
Fashion Fix Friday 25th April Edition – A capsule wardrobe for your holidays!
Inspired by my forthcoming holiday this week’s Fashion Fix Friday is all about how to pack well for your vacation and not take unnecessary garments.
Before you even go near your wardrobe, it’s important to think about certain aspects to your holiday because it will help determine how many and what type of clothes you’ll need:
- What will you be doing on holiday? Lying in the sun or wandering the hills or clubbing or city break or a bit of everything?
- What will the weather be like?
- How long are you going for & how are you getting there – will you have restrictions on luggage?
OK, you can now select the clothes that you think you’ll need for your holiday.
- Lay it all out on the bed.
- Create outfits for all the activities you’ll be doing on your holiday and for the duration. For example, exploring a city; dinner in a fancy restaurant; lounging on the beach; clubbing; running around after the kids etc. Choose your favourite items and what you feel good in. Leave the accessories at the moment. Anything that isn’t in a pile doesn’t come on holiday with you.
Next, we’re going to significantly reduce the number of clothes! If you think I’m crazy, cast your mind back to all the clothes you’ve taken on holiday “just in case” and never worn it. So, yup, we’re cutting back!
- Look again at your outfits and now create ones with garments that work with each other. A simple way to do this is to choose a colour palette using 2 neutral colours and up to 3 other colours. For example, for every neutral “bottom half” take 2 or 3 tops and you’ve now created 3 days’ outfits with only 4 items instead of 6. Try to also choose versatile day to night garments to save you even more space!
- Accessories. Use your colour palette to select a limited number – one or two scarves, a belt or two plus 3 necklaces should be enough for a week and to transform outfits take it from day to night.
- Shoes – keep these to a minimum, ideally 1x flats; 1x heels plus 1x flip flops or sandals! Again your colour palette will come in handy to select shoes that will go with most things. Remember to think about what you plan to be doing on holiday – do you really need 5 pairs of high heels!
- If you do need to take heavier items like boots, trainers or big coats, consider wearing these whilst you travel to your destination as it will give you more weight in your case.
Here are some of our favourite items for a capsule wardrobe:
Maxi dress by Fever £39.99
Petit Bateau Yellow top £64
Top packing tips!
– Roll your clothes rather than fold – reduces creases and they take up less space.
– Use underwear and socks to fill the nooks and crannies of your luggage or to pad out hats to stop them getting crushed.
– Pack your shoes in plastic bags to stop them transferring dirt to your clothes.
– Take a bin liner or laundry bag for your dirty laundry and wet towels on the way home –protects any clean clothes and makes it easier to sort when you get home.
