Fashion Fix Friday
Fashion fix Friday – 7th March edition
Pick a pretty pleat!
Pleats are big this Spring and I want some! I always love the notion of pleated skirt and when I see how gorgeous Taylor Swift looks in one, it makes me want to rush out and buy one.
However, as a size 12/14 hourglass with some squishy bits, I can’t just pick any old pleated skirt. As we’re all blessed with different body shapes, we all have to be careful to select a pleat that works for us and flatters. Here are my tips to get the best pleat for you.
Worried about your tummy?
Your best bet is to select a pleat that is stitched down at the waist band so it lies flat and does not add bulk. I would also recommend that you go for a fitted and flat waist band rather than an elasticated waist.
Want to add some shape to your hips?
If you’re a rectangle / sporty (Taylor Swift) shape you can add shape using pleats. Accordion pleats are full through the hips so will give you an hourglass shape. You can also get away with an elasticated waist as this can enhance the fullness over the hips.
Perfect pear or worried about your bum looking big?
A pleated skirt allows you to show off a tiny waist but can add bulk over the hips so be careful about the size of pleat and make sure that the pleat isn’t stretched. If you opt for a fuller skirt, try to balance out your smaller top half with a structured top or jacket (shoulder pads are your friend). Think about drawing the eye away from the hips by highlighting your waist and above – try a high-waisted skirt or a belt or make sure you tuck your top in so it draws the eye upward. Be careful with any patterns too – you don’t want to look wider. Consider a single colour and pattern on your top have, again to balance out your shape.
Enhancing curves!
Be sure to pick a fabric that is flowy as this won’t add bulk and skim over your bum, hips and thighs. Chiffons are great for this! Alternatively, opt for a pencil with some pleats towards the hem or instead of a split.
